Renton High School Replacement and Site Expansion- Phase 3
1. Notice of Action (NOA): Notice is given under RCW 43.21C.080, that Renton School District took the actions described in (2) below on November 5 and December 2, 2025. Any action to set aside, enjoin, review, or otherwise challenge such action on the grounds of noncompliance with the provisions of Chapter 43.21C RCW (State Environmental Policy Act) shall be commenced on or before January 2, 2026. Said NOA will be published two times in the newspaper. This NOA will also be filed with the Washington State Department of Ecology at its main office in Olympia prior to newspaper publication. Finally, a notice of the NOA will be posted at the site.
2. Description of Action Taken: On November 5, 2025, Renton School District issued a Determination of Mitigated Nonsignificance (MDNS) for the Renton High School Replacement and Site Expansion project- Phase 3. The MDNS provided a 14-day comment period concluding on November 19, 2025. On December 2, 2025 the District issued a Modified MDNS with no comment period.
3. Description of Proposal: The proposal represents the third of a phased SEPA environmental review and permitting process that is ultimately for the remodel and replacement of campus buildings, and expansion of Renton High School (RHS) campus. Phase 1 and 2 evaluated the demolition of structures, utilities and paving on the parcels acquired by RSD, which is now underway, and anticipated to continue through February 2026.
Phase 3 Project SEPA is for the demolition of the remaining seven buildings acquired by Renton School District (RSD), as well as the school buildings. Phase 3 also evaluates all other environmental elements for the replacement and site expansion of Renton High School. Construction of the new school campus will be phased to minimize disruption to the campus for students and community uses. Construction activities are expected to occur from June 2026 until September 2030.
The proposal includes the remodeling of the 1930s historic high school building and small renovations on the IPAC theater. A new, three-story 310,000 SF classroom building will be constructed fronting onto Logan Ave S and S 2nd St. Other improvements include new athletic fields, courts and amenities. A standard competition size baseball and softball field, and a multipurpose football/soccer/lacrosse practice field will be added with synthetic turf. Track facilities will be added to the existing field on the western portion of the campus. Approximately 478 parking spaces for staff, faculty and students will be provided, and the access to the campus will be reconfigured to allow for greater dispersal of traffic onto city streets. The drop-off/pick-up lane on S 2nd St will be expanded.

5. Type of Environmental Review under SEPA: A Notice of SEPA Consultation was issued and opened for review and public comment from September 16, 2025 through September 30, 2025. A MDNS and Environmental Checklist were published and opened for review and public comment from November 5, 2025 through November 19, 2025. A Modified MDNS was issued on Dec. 2, 2025.
